U.S. Students
Mourn, Move Together: September 20, 2001
Call
To Action:
To students and community organizers nationwide
We would like to
express our deepest condolences to the victims of the tragic events
of September 11th and their families and friends. In this spirit, and
in the spirit of peace, students for Peaceful Justice at Wesleyan University
strongly urge campuses and communities across the nation to hold an
hour of solidarity on Thursday, September 20th.
Let us join to mourn the devastating loss of life, to speak out against
attacks now occurring because of ethnic and religious identity, and
to raise our collective voices for peace.
As a group of concerned
Wesleyan students, we affirm our commitment to thorough and peaceful
justice, as opposed to retaliatory violence. If we respond to these
criminals in kind, our actions - like theirs - would cause innocent
people to die. We must defend justice. Our anger must not lead to discrimination,
and our fear must not consume our civil liberties. Justice must not
be confused with revenge."

September 20, 2001: National Day of Action for Peaceful Justice
More than 100 different
campuses were expected to participate in the Sept. 20 National Day of
Action for Peaceful Justice. It started at Wesleyan University when
a group of students got together to respond to the danger of war. They
reached out to friends and relatives at schools across the country.
Since September 15, more than 100 schools - colleges, universities and
high schools - have signed on to have some form of activity on
Thursday, Sept. 20.

people to die. We must defend justice. Our anger must not lead to discrimination,
and our fear must not consume our civil liberties. Justice must not
be confused with revenge.
Both individuals
and the U.S. Government are in a unique position to set a precedent.
We need not respond to violence with violence. To ensure that history
does not repeat itself, the decisions we make in the present must be
grounded in our understanding of the past. We must examine the history
that culminated in the events of September 11th -- including the United
States' own economic, social, and political actions. Let us use this
present moment to educate ourselves and share this perspective with
our communities and nation.
Within your own
communities and campuses, we encourage you to voice your demands for
non-violent action. We ask you to join us in creating government and
media attention to a public advocating peaceful resolutions. Please
use Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to educate yourselves and your communities,
to build local public and media attention, and to mobilize support.
This will culminate in a national day of action on Thursday September
20th between 12 noon and 1pm. This is your opportunity to create a visible
response in solidarity with communities and campuses nationwide.
Please join us this
week and in the future to continue advocating for peaceful justice.
We must be vocal and united to create a better future.
In solidarity,
A Group of Concerned
Wesleyan Students for Peaceful Justice
