..."This year, among the Kochs’ aims is to spend a projected four hundred million dollars in contributions from themselves and a small group of allied conservative donors they have assembled, to insure Republican victories in the 2018 midterm elections. Ordinarily, political reporters for Time magazine would chronicle this blatant attempt by the Kochs and their allies to buy political influence in the coming election cycle. Will they feel as free to do so now?"...

‘Because I am a girl: the state of the world’s girls 2008’

Plan International recently launched its new report ‘Because I am a girl: the state of the world’s girls 2008’ with a special focus on ‘in the shadow of war’.

"This report examines the state of girls in conflict situations around the world and looks at what happens to them before, during and after the war. In their words, “We want more opportunities to take part in making decisions that affect us... We do not want to be called in when you have already made the decisions. We want to work hand in hand with you.”

"It is aimed at all those who have a duty of care for young women – particularly those in power who have the responsibility to ensure that girls survive, are protected, can realise their potential, and are able to participate in decisions made about their lives. Nearly every country in the world has agreed that girls should have these rights, by ratifying the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and yet they continue to be ignored and deprived of their rights on a daily basis, especially – but not only – in conflict situations.

The report is part of Plan’s campaign to fight gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls out of poverty.
