Ordinarily, political reporters for Time magazine would chronicle this blatant attempt by the Kochs and their allies to buy political influence in the coming election cycle. Will they feel as free to do so now?"...

Background: Nuclear Ramifications of Japanese Catastrophe

From Joseph Gerson, American Friends Service Committee, Boston, Mass. USA

Friends,

Over the weekend I have been in touch with many of our partners in Japan. If there is any good news the calamities the Japanese people are suffering, it is that all of the leaders of the Japanese peace movement and their families appear to be safe, despite some pretty frightening experiences along the way. They are doing their part in the relief effort, and as we learn more about if and how people here in the U.S. can be of help, we will certainly inform you.

With millions of Japanese north of Tokyo now without water, electricity, gas, etc. it is difficult to think about how this catastrophe – with its nuclear dimensions man made – will affect us, but it is important that we do so. As the New York Times article that follows indicates, members of the crew of the U.S. aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, moved to waters off of Sendai to support Japanese military helicopters (and to promote a beneficent image of the U.S. military to counter popular opposition to the more than 100 military bases we maintain across Japan) was exposed to potentially deadly radiation from the Fukushima nuclear power plants.

While the article down plays the dangers of wind born radiation to the United States, please note Bob Alvarez’s caution and steps being taken by a range of U.S. agencies.

A Union of Concerned Scientists backgrounder on nuclear power plant accidents can be found at: http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/1413460/1655603533/name/explaining-japan-nuclear-reactor-disaster.pdf.

A resource on the connection between nuclear power and nuclear weapons can be found on the Peace & Economic Security Program’s web page: http://afsc.org/sites/afsc.civicactions.net/files/documents/Power%20Plants%20and%20Nuclear%20Weapons%20pdf.pdf.

To the best of our ability we will keep you informed about how we can be of help to our Japanese partners and communities. And if you had any doubts before about the need to phase out nuclear power here in the United States, I trust that the man-made dimensions of the Japanese catastrophe will convince you that we should do all that we can to make such “accidents” impossible here.

For Life,
Joseph Gerson
