Leading Rwanda Expert Killed in Plane Crash

Dr. Alison Des Forges, senior adviser to Human Rights Watch's Africa division for almost two decades, died in the crash of Flight 3407 from Newark to Buffalo on February 12, 2009.

..."Des Forges... dedicated her life to working on Rwanda and was the world's leading expert on the 1994 Rwanda genocide and its aftermath.

" 'Alison's loss is a devastating blow not only to Human Rights Watch but also to the people of Rwanda and the Great Lakes region,' said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch"...

She wrote an 800 page chronicle of the genocide:
Leave None to Tell the Story Genocide in Rwanda
March 1, 1999, with update: "Ten Years Later" in April 2004

"In 1994 a small elite chose genocide to keep power in Rwanda. They used state resources and authority to incite--or force--tens of thousands of Rwandans to kill the Tutsi minority. Within one hundred days, they slaughtered more than half a million people, three quarters of the Tutsi of Rwanda."
The report is available on-line here.

Women and Life on Earth e.V. extends its sympathy to the family and colleagues of Alison Des Forges, and to the people of Rwanda for their loss as well.
