Women in Israel mark Nakba Day
15 May 2009: "The Right of Return march today, Nakba Day, was organized and led this year by women, under the title "women united for the return of the refugees and for commemorating the Nakba". It was a dignified and solemn march through the streets of Wadi Nisnas in Haifa, followed by speeches and music. The police did not interfere. The marchers, Palestinian and Jewish, chanted slogans, held black flags and Palestinians flags, and stood in silence to remember the Nakba.
The event was organized by The Coalition of Women for Peace, Baladna - Association for Arab Youth, A-Siwar, Progressive Women's Union and Natrinkum."
Also quoted was a Reuter's story reporting that:
"Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's party wants to ban Israeli Arabs from marking the anniversary of what they term "the Catastrophe" or Nakba, when in 1948 some 700,000 Arabs lost their homes in the war that led to the establishment of the state of Israel."... (more)
